Volume Investigation
Year 5 have been exploring volume this week and decided to investigate the volume of their own classroom. They used meter rulers, trundle wheels and tape measures to take accurate measurements and then put this information into a formula to help them to calculate the volume.

In preparation for their SATs, the children in year 6 have been working in groups to pick apart a variety of word problems. They worked well together and had great mathematical discussions involving the number of steps and which calculations the problems required.

Investigating the circumference and diameter of a circle
Year 6 investigated the relationship between the circumference and diameter of a circle by measuring different wheels. The children collected the data and then used their knowledge of pi to explain that the statement they were investigating is always true.

Calculating Area and Perimeter

Calculating Area and Perimeter
Year 6 enjoyed a practical area and perimeter lesson where they had to move from table to table looking at the different composite shapes. They calculated the area and perimeter of these shapes, explained their reasons and convinced other groups that they were correct. Some children moved onto shapes which involved calculating the area of a triangle as well as the area and perimeter of a circle applying their knowledge of pi.

The children in class 8 completed an investigation to see if the length of our arm (between our wrists and elbows) is always, sometimes or never the same length as our foot. The children enjoyed working as a team to measure themselves and then came to a conclusion as a class.

Calculating Area and Perimeter
Year 6 enjoyed calculating the area and perimeter of composite shapes on the tables! The children worked together to find missing sides and then had to convince another group they were correct using mathematical reasoning. Some of the children confidently moved on to shapes which included triangles and circles and applied their fluency skills to solve the problems. Excellent maths work year 6!

Is the diameter of a wheel 3 and a bit times the circumference?
Today Year 6 investigated if it was always, sometimes or never true that the diameter of a wheel is 3 and a bit times the circumference. The children planned their own investigations and then enjoyed measuring the diameter and circumference of the wheels on their teachers' cars. After the data was collected, the children answered the question and used their knowledge of Pi to help with their reasoning.

Another lovely activity completed by our Reception children. Not only were they estimating the number of buttons needed to cover the fruit, but they also enjoyed answering questions about why they thought that and what would happen if they used a larger or smaller button.

The Miscalculation of Capt'n Half-Inch
Quantum Theatre visited the children at Sutton Oak to perform their maths play 'The Miscalculation of Capt'n Half-Inch'. The performances were split into KS1, LKS2 and UKS2 and were full of maths concepts from the curriculum. The children thoroughly enjoyed learning and revising these concepts in a different way and solved the problems to help find the missing treasure!
