The Three Little Pigs

Week commecing 19.09.22

In Reception this week our focus book has been 'The Three Little Pigs'. The children have enjoyed listening to and repeating phrases from the story. We explored the materials that the Three Little Pigs used to build their houses and discussed why the wolf could not blow down the house made of bricks. The children enjoyed rein-acting the story using the story props and puppets and investigated the materials used by the three pigs, testing which material was the strongest, by blowing them just like the Big Bad Wolf. We also had lots of fun in our outdoor construction and junk modelling area, using our imagination to build from lots of different materials of all shapes and sizes, developing both our fine motor and gross motor skills.

To support this week’s learning topic 'The Three Little Pigs' we have also been exploring a variation of homes and discussed what makes each home different. We discussed ideal places that would be best for building each of their homes. We talked about why lots of space is needed and what we might like to live close to. We then enjoyed looking at an aerial view of our school and surrounding areas, exploring what they could see and if they could recognise open spaces, roads and other simple features. The children individually chose where they would build a house within the area. The children then enjoyed drawing a building design of the house that they would build.

In maths we have been learning all about subitising. The children have taken part in group activities to practise and develop instant recall of knowing the total number of objects or images without needing to count them individually.

The children have also enjoyed developing their gross motor and movement skills, that they have already acquired by demonstrating their capabilities when climbing, jumping, and balancing on our new outdoor climbing equipment.

Each activity has been filled with chatter, whether it be getting into role as a character from the story, or talking about what they are making next and what they're going to do next.

Next week we will be learning all about individuality and what makes us unique, driven by the stories 'Who are you' by Smriti Halls and 'We’re are all works of art' by Mark Sperring and ‘What makes me a me’ by Ben Faulks.
